GERUND (कृदन्त)

 

क्रियापदाच्या ing युक्त रूपाचा नाम म्हणून उपयोग केला असल्यास त्यास Gerund किंवा verbal Noun म्हणतात. Form of gerund is Verb + ing.

 

3G1. writing, reading, swimming, walking, cutting, talking, playing etc.

 

Gerund चे उपयोग

 

1) वाक्यात वाक्याचा कर्ता म्हणून gerund चा उपयोग होतो.

 

उदा. :

 i) Swimming is a good exercise.

 

 ii) Speaking is easier than writing.

 

iii) Looking after children needs a lot of patience.

 

iv) Smoking in the auditorium is prohibited.

 

2) वाक्याचा कर्म म्हणून पण gerund चा उपयोग करतात. उदा. :

 

i) He likes reading detective novels.

 

ii) Would you mind waiting for a few minutes?

 

iii) I hate waiting at bus stops.

 

3) वाक्यात शब्दयोगी अव्ययाचे (preposition) चे कर्म म्हणून gerund वापरतात. उदा. :

 

i) He inaugurated the school by lighting a lamp.

 

ii) He was fined for being drunk while driving.

 

iii) He is thinking of resigning his job.

 

iv) They resumed their journey after resting an hour.

 

4) वाक्यात कर्त्यांचा पूरक शब्द (Complement) म्हणून देखील वापर करतात. उदा. :

 

 i) Talking to him is wasting time.

 

ii) Seeing is believing.

 

5) वाक्यात gerund नंतर येणाऱ्या नामाचे विशेषण म्हणून देखील याचा वापर केला जातो. उदा. :

i) He has a collection of walking sticks.

 

ii) He bought a new dining table.

 

iii) She wastes hours before her looking glass.

 

 iv) The village has a free reading room.

 

वरील वाक्यांचा अर्थ काळजीपूर्वक लक्षात ठेवावा.

 

1) A walking stick means not a stick that walks but ‘a stick for walking.' त्याचप्रमाणे )

 

2) Dining table - a table for dining.

 

3) looking glass - a glass for looking in.

 

4) reading room - a room for reading.
